Far Left Brainwashing Occurs at Oakland University Graduation Ceremony

Dan Poole | Yesterday, Oakland University in Rochester Hills, MI held its ceremony for the seniors graduating in the spring of 2012. Yours truly was one of those graduates.

A graduation ceremony is supposed to be a time of celebration and honor, and the speeches that are given before and after students receive their diplomas are supposed to be straight forward and devoid of any political posturing.

Alas, there is hardly a major university left in the United States that won’t take an opportunity to brainwash their students with far left propaganda. Such was the case yesterday when Oakland University gave an “Honorary Degree” to 97 year old Grace Lee Boggs.

Boggs was introduced so lavishly you’d think she was like Former Beatle, John Lennon (“We’re more popular than Jesus now.”) She was held up as the epitome of honor and virtue. The idea Oakland University was trying to convey is this: Grace Lee Boggs is who the graduating seniors should strive to become.

Alas, there is hardly a major university left in the United States that won’t take an opportunity to brainwash their students with far left propaganda. Such was the case yesterday when Oakland University gave an “Honorary Degree” to 97 year old Grace Lee Boggs.

In her speech, she encouraged the graduates to be the next American Revolutionaries, and she used the word “imagine” multiple times in describing how they should think. (Once again, Lennon wouldn’t have it any other way).

Who is Grace Lee Boggs that Oakland University would shower her with such extravagant praise? Let’s look at her history:

Boggs was literally a communist activist who was a member of the Workers Party (US), Johnson-Forest Tendency, the Socialist Workers Party, and the Correspondence Publishing Committee.

All four of these organizations were as far to the left as you can get. They each espoused communism and socialism in one way or another, and they derived their ideology directly from the debunked theories of Karl Marx.

In the 1960’s, Boggs and her husband became very involved in the Black Power movement, notably offering Malcom X a place to stay whenever he visited Detroit. At this time, she identified much more closely with Malcom X than Martin Luther King Jr. “Like most black power activists, I tended to view King’s concepts of non-violence and Beloved Community as somewhat naïve and sentimental,” as she describes in her recent speech entitled, Catching up with Martin.”

Three of those four organizations were Trotskyist, named after Bolshevik Revolutionary Leon Trotsky, one of the three communist gangsters – Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin being the others – who spearheaded the Bolshevik conquest of Russia in 1917 and slaughtered millions of innocent people in one of the bloodiest genocidal campaigns in human history.

Boggs wasn’t just a member of these four repugnant groups, she was also a co-founder of one of them – the Johnson–Forest Tendency, which is listed as “part of the series on Communism” according to that Wikipedia article.

As was mentioned in the ceremony, Boggs married a black man by the name of James Boggs, who “play(ed) an influential role in the radical wing of the civil rights movement and interacted with many of the most important civil rights activists of the day including Malcolm X, Ossie Davis and many others.”

In other words, James Boggs was of the same mindset as the Black Panther Party and the Nation of Islam.

James and Grace Lee Boggs both had ties with a who’s who of anti-American communist radicals, from C.L.R. James and Raya Dunayevskaya to Lyman Paine and Martin Glaberman. Dunayevskaya was such a dye-in-the-wool communist that she was Leon Trotsky’s secretary.

1940's - Grace Lee Boggs with C.L.R. James and Raya Dunayevskaya. "CLR was born in Tunapuna, Trinidad, His father was a schoolteacher and his mother an avid reader of English and American novels...History as he told and interpreted it became a weapon in the ongoing struggle because he openly and unabashedly studied the past with a view to creating the future."

Like many of the communists she worked with, Boggs believed that the Soviet Union was not an example of totalitarianism, but rather was an example of “State Capitalism.”

The Trotskyite Workers Party was especially influential on Grace Lee Boggs: “To Grace, ‘Joining the Workers Party seemed a good way to start,’ and that’s what she did, in order to get the political education she felt she needed.” Boggs saw Detroit as “a ‘Movement’ city where radical history had been made and could be made again.”

In other words, when Boggs encouraged the OU graduates to be the next American Revolutionaries, she wasn’t talking about the Founding Fathers, she was talking about the bloodthirsty communists. And when she talked about imagining things, she was referring to the workers’ paradise – the Utopia – that cannot exist and will never exist.

Indeed, while Boggs is thankful for what the vicious Occupy Wall Street Movement has done, she doesn’t think it goes nearly far enough: “You have a long way to go. This enemy of ours is not just Wall Street. It’s the whole culture.” (You can watch more of her here).

Boggs is also a radical environmentalist, hence why she asked, “what will move us to care for our biosphere instead of using our technological mastery to increase the speed at which we are making it uninhabitable?”

The idea that humans are making the earth uninhabitable is an eco-terrorist myth, but Boggs is a communist ideologue, so she doesn’t care. She thinks Detroit is “a symbol of the end of industrial society,” which means she thinks free market capitalism will result in the collapse of first world nations thanks to the myth of environmental degradation.

And just who is Boggs’ intellectual hero? That would be Immanuel Wallerstein:

“In 1975 The Modern World System by Immanuel Wallerstein gave me a sense of the centuries of catastrophes and struggles that went into the decline of feudalism and the emergence of capitalism.”

Wallerstein’s work has been torn apart by Historians from across the political spectrum, and “similar to Marx, Wallerstein predicts that capitalism will be replaced by a socialist economy.”

Wallerstein also has made bald-faced lies about free market capitalism, claiming:

“It is simply not true that capitalism as a historical system has represented progress over the various previous historical systems that it destroyed or transformed. Even as I write this, I feel the tremour that accompanies the sense of blasphemy. I fear the wrath of the gods, for I have been moulded in the same ideological forge as all my compeers and have worshipped at the same shrines.”

So influential is Wallerstein on Boggs that he wrote the afterword for the new edition of her recent book, The Next American Revolution: Sustainable Activism for the Twenty-First Century. The description for this book is laced with far left rhetoric:

“A world dominated by America and driven by cheap oil, easy credit, and conspicuous consumption is unraveling before our eyes. In this powerful, deeply humanistic book, Grace Lee Boggs, a legendary figure in the struggle for justice in America, shrewdly assesses the current crisis – political, economical, and environmental – and shows how to create the radical social change we need to confront new realities.”

Boggs argues in this book that “too many on the left and among progressive forces are on the defensive. Fighting Back is not enough.” In other words, she wants the likes of Occupy Wall Street to go for the jugular.

Finally, Boggs asks the following question: “Can we build an America in which people of all races and ethnicities live together in harmony, and Euro-Americans, in particular, celebrate their role as one among many minorities constituting the multiethnic majority?” Boggs is thus an anti-white marauder who worships at the evil alter of diversity and multiculturalism.

On Page 8 of the 72 page Commencement guide that every parent received, Oakland University completely failed to say anything about Boggs’ repugnant, sordid history. Instead, the commencement guide highlighted her “many awards” and provided three glowing pictures at the top, one of which was a logo with a pretty butterfly in the center (at least it wasn’t a picture of Skittles).

OU could have given an Honorary Degree to a fire fighter or police officer who served his community for decades. Or they could have given it to a missionary who was on the ground helping starving children in Africa.

Instead, OU gave it to a communist revolutionary. They just couldn’t pass up an opportunity for far left indoctrination even when it’s totally uncalled for.

But here’s the larger point: Oakland University is not known as a Marxist brainwashing institution. Nor should it be. I thoroughly enjoyed my four years there and did not clash with most of the professors I had. Compared to the University of Michigan or any of the Ivy League schools, OU is decidedly moderate in terms of its politics.

So how does one assess the Boggs situation? By putting your imagination to work. In the preface to Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, the legendary abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison said the following:

“The experience of Frederick Douglass, as a slave, was not a peculiar one; his lot was not especially a hard one; his case may be regarded as a very fair specimen of the treatment of slaves in Maryland, in which State it is conceded that they are better fed and less cruelly treated than in Georgia, Alabama, or Louisiana.”

Garrison went on to say: “Yet, how deplorable was his situation! What terrible chastisements were inflicted upon his person! What still more shocking outrages were perpetrated upon his mind!”

If OU is giving an Honorary Degree to a communist like Boggs, then imagine what it’s like elsewhere. In terms of far left brainwashing, Oakland University is analogous to slavery in Maryland, while U-M and the Ivy League schools are analogous to slavery in the Deep South.

The brainwashing is way worse at some universities then others, but it exists in pretty much all universities across the United States.

Know this America: The 1960s radicals are now fully in control of the education system. Your sons and daughters aren’t being educated; they are being turned into slaves for the government, little Marxist soldiers who will robotically tout the anti-American values that are thrust on them.

The fact that a communist revolutionary like Grace Lee Boggs would be portrayed as the manifestation of America values is a damning indictment of how deeply infected the education system has become. As Vladimir Lenin said

“Give me four years to teach the children and the seed I have sown will never be uprooted. Give us the child for 8 years and it will be a Bolshevik forever.”

As you can see, the true history of Grace Lee Boggs was whitewashed.

NOTE: When I think of anti-Western Civilization at Oakland University I think of Angela Davis and the FBI poster when she was wanted for Murder. Grace Lee Boggs and Angela Davis are cut from the same cloth. What a country! Be on the FBI’s most wanted list and become a professor!
