Inspired by Southern Poverty Law Center, Attempted Mass Shooter Floyd Lee Corkins Pleads Guilty

Floyd Lee Corkins, II, who shot a security guard at the Family Research Center in Washington, DC pleaded guilty Wednesday, January 6th, to wounding the security guard at the Washington headquarters of a conservative Christian lobbying group, a shooting that made headlines in part because the man was carrying 15 Chick-Fil-A sandwiches. Southern Poverty Law Center

American fast-food chain Chick-Fil-A was the focus of controversy following a series of public comments made in the middle of 2012 by chief operating officer Dan Cathy opposing same-sex marriage and Cathy’s donations to political organizations which supported traditional marriages and traditional families.

Chick-Fil-HateFloyd Corkins II, 28, acknowledged in a plea agreement that he intended to kill as many people as possible during the shooting at the Family Research Council in August 2012. He also planned to target other organizations that oppose gay marriage if he wasn’t stopped.

According to news reports, Corkins was directly inspired to take action by a list of supposed “hate groups” on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s website.

As Life News notes

Corkins said he intended to “kill as many as possible and smear the Chick-Fil-A sandwiches in victims’ faces, and kill the guard.” The prosecutor said they reviewed the [Corkins’] family computer and found that he identified his targets on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s web site.

In his plea agreement, Corkins acknowledged he identified the Family Research Council as “an anti-gay organization” by visiting Southern Poverty’s website. The head of the Council, Tony Perkins, called on the group to stop labeling his organization and others hate groups because of their stance on gay issues. A spokeswoman for the Alabama-based Law Center did not immediately return a telephone message.

Teaching Hate

The Family Research Council still appears on SPLC’s Washington D.C. “hate map,” which brands the conservative group as “anti-gay.”

On January 11, 2013, a federal district judge in Colorado ordered the Southern Poverty Law Center (“SPLC”) to remove a document revealing the home address of the President of Public Advocate of the United States, a leading nonprofit advocacy organization supporting traditional marriage, to prevent potential “politically motivated harassment or even violence.”

Ironically, “the Southern Poverty Law Center asked a federal judge today to block a law requiring state officials to compile an online list of immigrants unable to prove they are not “unlawfully present aliens” – a state-sanctioned black list that not only violates federal law but could encourage harassment and violence against the state’s [illegal] immigrants’.”

Will the media now talk about the Southern Poverty Law Center’s routine and reckless use of the label “hate group” with which it “black lists” those who they disagree with?

i am definitely concerned that the Supreme Court will just overturn this law the same way it has ruled before, and on top of that it will overturn the benefits for the families of Camp Lejeune. i don't like the Westboro Church more than any other rational person, but i fear this will result in nothing.

  2. Will there be any lawsuits to overturn the law? Or do those wishing to overturn the law have to wait until someone is harmed by the law to have standing to file a lawsuit?
