Every year in September, up to 50 groups from Germany, Austria and Switzerland – and even German groups from other countries – march in the German-American Steuben Parade. If your music or dance group, your carnival club, your group in historic tracht or uniform is interested in marching in the Parade, we are more than happy to invite you. Please introduce yourself in a letter, and send it together with a group photo and any other suitable media (CD, DVD) to the Parade Committee at the address given below. Official invitations go out in November for the Parade in the coming year.
There are only three German-American communities that annually celebrate the contributions of Freiherr Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben – New York, Philadelphia, and Chicago.
It was Benjamin Franklin of Philadelphia who recommended von Steuben’s services to General Washington during the American Revolutionary War. At Valley Forge, outside of Philadelphia, von Steuben trained the Revolutionary Army using the Manual of Arms he developed, which closely resembles the current drill manual used by the United States Army. It’s been argued that without von Steuben’s services, the United States of America would likely not have gained their independence.
